Cheese Fondue Casserole

Cheese Fondue Casserole

from the Houston Junior League Cookbook

INGREDIENTS:

12 slices white or French bread
3 cups milk, scalded
3 eggs
  Salt and pepper
2 dashes Tabasco
3/4 pound sharp cheese
1/4 cup butter

TO PREPARE:

Cut crusts from bread; place bread, stacked double, in greased oblong baking dish.  Combine scalded milk and slightly-beaten eggs; add salt, pepper and Tabasco.  Cut cheese in small pieces and melt with butter in top of double boiler.  Add cheese mixture to egg mixture and blend well.  Pour over bread.  Place baking dish in pan of water and bake at 350 degrees about 25 minutes, or until firm.  If desired, serve with mushroom sauce.  Casserole may be prepared the day before and refrigerated until ready to bake.

SERVES:  6
